Howard A. Aiken Obituary

Howard A. Aiken, formerly of Kennett Square, PA, age 89 of Silver Spring, MD, died Wednesday, December 14, 2005.

He was the husband of Hazel Howell Aiken with whom he shared 10 years of marriage and Alice M. Aiken who died in 1991 and with whom he shared 51 years of marriage. Born in Kennett Square, PA, he was the son of the late Robert D. and Sara Elizabeth (Sadie) Sills Aiken. Howard was a WWII veteran, serving in Europe and earned a Purple Heart for injuries suffered during the Battle of the Bulge. He retired from Hercules Inc. after 42 years of service. He was voted to the "Kennett Square Old Timers Baseball Hall of Fame" and he enjoyed hunting, sports, travel and spending time with his family. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kennett Square and regularly attended St. Johns Episcopal Church of Chevy Chase, MD. He will be sorely missed.

Survivors include, in addition to his wife, 2 daughters and 2 sons, Barbara Aiken Calhoun and husband, Alan Calhoun, of Amherst, MA. Cheryl Aiken of Galena, MD, Craig Aiken and his wife, Mary, of Unionville, PA and Timothy Aiken and his wife, Jean, of New Ipswich, NH; 3 grandsons, Colin, Julian and Bryan; and 2 brothers, George Aiken and James Aiken, both of Kennett Square, PA. He was preceded in death by 1 son, Howard; 1 sister, Mildred; and 1 brother, Robert.

A memorial service will be held 1 pm on Monday, December 19, 2005, at the First Baptist Church of Kennett Square, 415 W. State St., Kennett Square, PA 19348. Friends and family may call from 12 noon-1 pm before the service. Interment will follow in Union Hill Cemetery.
